As a social worker, I often encounter individuals who feel disconnected, unfulfilled, or uncertain about their path in life. This often stems from not living in alignment with their core values.

But what does it truly mean to live according to your values? Why is it so important for mental health and well-being? And how can you start living a life that reflects what truly matters to you?

What Are Values?

Values are the guiding principles that shape our behavior, decisions, and life choices. They are deeply held beliefs reflecting what we find meaningful and important. While values vary from person to person, they often include concepts like honesty, compassion, family, independence, creativity, or justice.

Unlike goals, which are specific achievements, values provide the “why” behind our actions. They lay the foundation for a meaningful life. Living by your values brings clarity, purpose, and direction.

Who do you admire, and what qualities do they embody? Our role models often reflect the values we aspire to live by. Identify the traits you find inspiring and consider how they align with your personal values.

When setting goals, ensure they are grounded in your values. For instance, if family is a core value, instead of aiming to “earn more money,” aim to “spend more time with loved ones.” This shifts your focus from external achievements to internal fulfillment.
